Author's Commentary for Part Two: Escape From Egg Island

COVER

Again, it was very bland and had only Amy on it, but I re-did it to include Cream (who also comes with Cheese, who does not appear in this story because, at this point, Cream was a very new character and I hadn’t seen Cheese, but who’s to say that Cheese wasn’t just not captured?)

1

Ah, the prologue, recapping events using scenes from the last part to tie it together. I’m so glad I can do better stuff now, cuz most of this looks baaaad (though I do like the Prison Air Ship, really the Sonic 3D final boss).

2

That cockpit sucks, honestly. This was where I first used Advance backgrounds in my comics and they are much smaller than Genesis ones, something I seemed to not notice or forget, so things are a little cramped here. Amy’s hands are bound and you can kind of make that out. Sonic has a lot of faith in Tails, which is good, Metal’s reintroduction is good but that red/yellow background thing is weak.

3

FRIGGING WHITE SPACE! This was where I first used Action Scenes, which is where I depict part of a battle with no background or a special background (like reds and yellows and stuff). It works, but later I spliced it into an actual background to compensate for all this WHITE SPACE! Metal seals Sonic in a bubble, replacing the sprites with Sonic Triple Trouble sprites.

That picture with the Prison Ship in took ages to do at the time. The ship is a bit big and fuzzy but it works pretty well. Bean, Bark and Antoine are here as cameos. Exactly how they escaped from their captivity is never explained but they obviously did because they show up in later comics. The first use of Sonic’s Flash Shield and, unlike Fleetway, I used it again in later comics. Again, the story line branches off with Sonic’s sudden disappearance. Exactly how he vanishes through time without a Time Stone nearby is also never explained, it was waved for the sake of dramatic impact. That holding cell is a curious mix of Wing Fortress and Scrap Brain, it seems alright but I could do it a lot better now.

Again, I knew very little about Cream. I didn’t know she had a Chao called Cheese or that she could fly (hence why she doesn’t until right at the end). There were only a few custom made sprites of her based on a few screen shots of Sonic Advance 2. Also, she speaks much more adult here and much more knowledgeable than in later comics, but I tried to keep a balance so she didn’t sound too old. It works pretty well, and is probably the best way to introduce Cream.

How weak is Metal?! Amy and Cream JUMP ON HIM and it takes him out?! Well, there is a reason for that other than a plot device or whatever, and it’s explained in "I, Metal" that this Metal had a tendency to be prone to shutdowns and being easily disabled because it wasn’t as armoured as the last, relying more on speed. That’s my explanation and, since I wrote all this, I’m sticking to it.

Bit of drama here as they reach the end of the Island but the Bridge is gone, having been destroyed by Sonic in BTFCE, what irony. Also, Amy doesn’t know Sonic too well at this point and obviously hasn’t spoken to him much as she knew nothing of Eggman or the loss of the Destiny Bridge, silly little girl. Luckily, Tails and Ray save the day, linking the two storylines together

8

Metal KILLED Ray with that shot! I really should have toned that down a bit, it looks way too powerful to have just stunned Ray. Ray and Cream both know about the Time Stones and I actually wanted to put in a subtle hint at an attraction between the two, of course that was dispelled later with Cream’s character tweaks. Again, as I said, I didn’t know Cream could fly so she gets a boost from Ray (it’s later desperately explained as Cream is learning how to fly and isn’t good at it yet).

This last scene is used to tell you that these guys are wrapped up for now, you know where they’re going and what they’re plan is and now you’re supposed to concentrate on what’s happening elsewhere so that when the do reappear it’s more dramatic.

OVERALL

Not as good as Part 1, lots of white space and small scenes, but it works for what it is. I could do this part over again much better than this, and I’d say this part is the weakest of the four, but solid enough to give Amy and Cream some good character development and time so they are established.
